Grant’s Story: Transforming into a Hero with 3D Printing

When 5-year-old Grant was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), his dedicated Children’s Nebraska care team quickly learned of his love of superheroes – right down to his dog named Thor. Children’s Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Child Life and 3D Imaging & Advanced Visualization departments teamed up to create a special superhero action figure with Grant’s face 3D printed on it, cheering him up amid hospital visits and serving as a symbol of the superhero strength he’s shown in his fight against cancer.

Surrounded by his parents, siblings and Children’s team, Grant received his custom action figure, and it immediately found a prized place on the shelf for his favorite toys at home in Ashland, Neb. Now in the long-term maintenance phase of treatment, Grant has continued with chemotherapy infusions at Children’s and takes oral chemo medication each day as he begins his kindergarten year at school.

Watch Grant’s story of strength and support, and join us in recognizing the many children and families impacted by pediatric cancer this Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
